What happens to my PDF after I upload it?

The PDF is read in your browser — it never leaves your device as a file. Only the extracted text is sent over a TLS (HTTPS) connection to a third-party large language model to generate your summary and answer your questions. We do not store your policy or summary on our servers.

Is my policy stored?

No. Nothing is saved on our servers. The summary lives in your browser tab until you close it. The upstream AI provider may retain inputs briefly for abuse monitoring per their standard policy (typically up to ~30 days) and then deletes them. They do not use your data to train their models.

Question 3

Which policies are supported?

Accepted Answer

The tool is optimized for US homeowners (HO-3 and HO-5), condo (HO-6), and renters (HO-4) policies. Other property insurance documents may also work but aren't specifically tuned. Auto, life, and health policies are out of scope.

How long does the summary take?

Usually 10–30 seconds, depending on the length of your policy and current load on the AI service.

Do you support scanned PDFs?

Not yet. We need real text in the PDF to read it — most insurer portals provide text-based PDFs. If your file is a scanned image, the upload will fail with a friendly message asking for a text-based version.

Can I export or save my summary?

Not yet. For now, your browser's print-to-PDF works on the policy view. A built-in download is on the roadmap.

No. KnowYourHomePolicy is an educational tool that explains what's in your document. It is not legal, claims, or insurance advice. For decisions about a claim or coverage, talk to your insurer or a licensed professional.

What AI is used?

A third-party large language model accessed over an encrypted (TLS) connection. The provider does not use your data to train its models. We've kept the wording generic so we can swap providers if a better option becomes available.
